With the rise of podcasting, it is a great platform to reach more of your ideal customers through the podcasting community. I have been a podcast host with my show, “PROFIT With A Plan” now in its 4th year with close to 200 episodes, hosting fantastic guests as they share helpful content for small businesses. Podcasting is an excellent way to get your message, product, and service out to a growing audience. It’s your virtual stage. Often you can’t sell from this stage but you can offer something to get their email addresses and then sell to them later.
Guesting is most often free. It can be recorded at your own place with no need to travel. It doesn’t take much to get started and it can be a great tool to grow your list of prospects that can eventually turn into customers. Here’s what you need to do to get on someone’s podcast:
The Basic Equipment – A Zoom account as many like myself record both video and audio. Get a basic ring light and place it behind your screen for good facial lighting ($15 on Amazon). A clean background or a promotional Zoom background works well too. Now for the microphone. You MUST have an external microphone for the best sound. There are many you can get from a Blue Yeti ($99 on Amazon) to your earbuds from your phone. I use my Air Pods Pro and have had a great sound. If you use a Yeti or other version, you may want to get headphones anyway to avoid the feedback from your computer speakers. Having a clean sound is the most important for the recording. Test your sound with your new setup. Make sure there are no delays or feedback.
Create a One-Pager – This is a single page that has your headshot and information about you as an expert. You’ll want to share a theme, like in my case, ‘Business Growth’. Come up with 3-5 topic ideas that you could discuss at length. List them with a couple of benefits that the audience would gain by listening. List several questions that the host could ask you that ‘Lays Up’ you to provide some valuable information so that will entice the audience to lean in. Finally, list your contact information and provide any links to other shows. Bonus: Subscribe and give the show a great review. Another bonus is to explain to the host how you will promote the show.
Build Your List – Podcasting will not sell your stuff for you, but it is a fantastic way to get listeners to download a special report, a set of tips, a trial offer, your book, or anything of value that makes obvious sense to your topic. This is also known as a lead magnet. You should have somewhere to send the audience and some way to collect their information. It is a waste of time to say, connect with me on LinkedIn or call me for a consultation. The probability of that happening is slim to none. You want to provide them with something of value and get their email address so that you can nurture that relationship and ask them to buy when you have them on your list.
Hunt Podcasts – Go find some podcasts that you would like to guest on. Send an email to the host suggesting your topic and why it would benefit their audience. There are numerous podcast listing sites that are free or have premium listings that are very inexpensive. There are also many podcast agents that for monthly fees of $500-$2500 will guarantee a certain number of shows per month and will facilitate the introduction as well as help you set up your one page, topics, guesting skills, etc. Not necessary, but if you are short on time and long on money, they are very helpful.
Now that you know how easy it is to be a guest on a podcast. Add it to your marketing and promotional plan. It creates awareness for your business and levels you as an expert. By the way, you can always repurpose the interview, post it on your own site, and more.
