Having a plan that you follow is really important for you to achieve your goals. I talk about it all the time. But have you taken the time to get in tune with your why?
Whenever you are setting goals the real motivation to achieve those goals is often something other than money. Money is a great motivator, don’t get me wrong, but money is simply the tool that gets you what you really want. Have you sat with yourself and your team to determine what that why is for your company?
Here are a few questions you can ask yourself to find out what the real why is:
1. If you dominate your market, what would you like to be known for? I’m sure it isn’t the low-priced leader or the most product sold. What benefit does your company really provide? Maybe it’s 1 million beautiful teenage smiles if you are an orthodontist. Maybe it’s our clients who pay the least amount of possible tax while keeping more of their hard-earned money. If you are an accountant. How about you?
2. If your company could make a significant change to another, what could that be? Transformation can occur in the environment, your neighborhood, your employees, and your customer’s life. If you are running your business to make an impact, then how can you focus more of your planning and decisions to elevate that impact. Can you make a big deal about it on social and in your marketing to bring in more customers that appreciate what you are doing? Jump on a cause!
3. If you want to be a trailblazer in your industry, how can you innovate? For many of us creative entrepreneurs, we believe that we can do something easier, better, faster, or stronger than what’s been done before. Staying in the blue ocean of newness and making new trends is exciting. This can be a constant challenge but with worthy outcomes. Innovation can be a great motivator to rocket a company’s growth and the word “New” is one of the greatest marketing attractors. So what’s new in your business?
4. Yes there are some of you out there that are all about making more money, but what will that money do for you and your family? Maybe it’s a cabin in the mountains that keeps your distant family together on holidays. Maybe it’s putting the next 5 generations through college. Could it just be that you want your family to never have to worry about money ever again? That’s ok and a great driving force to grow your company. How do you plan to engage your team and the market around your desire for more money? Maybe attract those that want the same?
Whatever your why is, it is very important that you have added it into your business as a core value and as a success marker for your business plan. When everyone knows the real reason behind your goals, they can jump on your cause with you and help to push for the win.
