As we roll into a new year, resolutions are on many business owners’ minds. What can I do better this year? How can I get my team to perform better? Where can I find more profit in my business? These are an example of what all business owners are thinking at the beginning of each year.
Now is NOT the time to pull out the same old resolutions to achieve these dreams. It’s time to build new habits! New habits are the actions that make change happen. Sources vary in the time it takes to form a new habit from 21 days to 90 days. And you’ll need to continue with the habit for about a year to really make it stick.
Your new habit can help you reach your company’s goals. How can you bring your new habits into your business?
Get Buy-In For The New Habit
After you’ve decided what your new habit is, you need to communicate it. Not just telling everyone, but explaining the reason and benefits that the new habit will provide. Whether it’s just you or your team, everyone should have a clear understanding and agreement with the new habit. When you have buy-in from all members, success comes from the commitment to the new habit.
Create A Plan On How To Execute On The New Habit
Just stating that you are going to make a new habit is not good enough. It takes a plan! How do you transition into the new habit, such as establishing new procedures? How long will it take to implement the new habit? Who is accountable and who will do the verification? New habits require a direction from leadership and clear expectations for the team to follow.
What does success look like?
How do you know if the new habit is a success? What does success look like? Does the new habit solve to the problem you were looking for when you chose the new habit? Did it increase revenue? Solve a delivery problem? Make a system better? Whenever a change occurs, it is best to review and evaluate the success of the new change. When success occurs, reward the team. If success has yet to arrive, re-evaluate. It may need a slight adjustment in the plan, people, or process. Then make the adjustments.
Tossing those old resolutions for a new habit provides a clear action plan for your success. Now is the time to get started improving your business people, processes, and profit.
