The next step in growing your company requires that you leave the solopreneur job or owner technician model and build a team business. The kind of team that I am referring to, is a team that is able to expertly manage their tasks and propel the company forward with little oversight from the owner. They provide ideas as if the company’s goals are theirs to make your business even more successful.
The challenge that many businesses have is finding that perfect, 5-Star team member. Yeah, you heard that, a team member, not an employee. Here are a few ways to build a team that can run your company for you.
Create A Culture
When your company has a strong culture of getting the job done, everyone pushes the boulder up the hill together. Your culture has to do with your values and mission. It also creates your non-negotiables and what your company stands for. When you set this as the baseline for every hire, you begin to create a team that believes similarly and acts as you would. The culture needs to be presented at every meeting, with every decision, and with your customers. This brings everyone together.
Hire Slowly And Fire Quickly
Take the time to hire the right person. Make them show off and work for the opportunity to help you grow your company. Never hire someone that just wants a paycheck. That will be a problem for your culture. Do 3 interviews, have other team members or business owners interview them, ask them about scenarios that model your culture, and call on their references but ask the questions that get you the truthful answers. Then, if a mistake occurs and you hired the wrong employee, fire them as soon as you feel that they are not the right fit. You don’t want to have them damage your culture.
Create An Onboarding Journey
Your employee begins the day you both say yes. That 2-weeks’ notice they give their old company can be an incredible opportunity for you to set the stage and to get them into the position where they can hit the ground running. Your team needs to be treated the same way you treat your customers. Send them a book about your culture and your team, and send them the necessary onboarding paperwork in advance. Warm them up to the way you treat your customers by showing them the same treatment, like a thank you gift of company swag. Your team is representing your company, make them feel like it was the best decision they ever made and they’ll treat your customers the same way.
Your best leverage for growth is to hire a team. Why not hire a team that can best represent your company and that can help you grow it to the one you are driving for without the traditional problems that other companies have with their employees?
